“Deeply satisfying.... [An] engrossing blend of theory, history, and anecdote.” - Wall Street Journal“Among the best of [its] genre to appear in recent years.” - Malcolm W. Browne, New York Times Book Review“Readers seeking to go beyond today's headlines will not find a higher authority (or a better storyteller) to discuss the cosmo's most bizarre features…Masterful and intriguing.” - Marcia Bartusiak, Washington Post“Superb. It is what many other books about their subject ought to have been and were not.... I think the book itself will be a strong force.” - Carl Sagan“Black Holes & Time Warps reveals the scientific enterprise as very few books do; it richly overflows with history, modern physics, the excitement of discovery, and rare, firsthand scientific styles and temperaments.” - Alan Lightman

I read these books because I like to think I’m smarter than I really am, and it gives me tidbits of knowledge I use at parties to woo the ladies (ofyouknowwhatimean). So, I’ve read most of them out there. This, by far, is my favorite. It boils it down so that a former infantryman like myself can make sense of all the big words without turining it into a coloring book simplification of particle physics.I’ve bought it four times already because I keep giving them away to people.I’d give it six stars if I could.

I picked this book out of my library and said I really need to read this book. I know of Kip Thornes name and saw him on a video clip. I have started reading this and it is written starting out as if you were assigned to explore these real entities called black holes. He tells the story of what you would do as an explorer like a Star Trek show. He makes you realize in your imagination what that creature looks like and describes it as if you were listening to him right there with you. He even explains in very easy to understand concepts what powers of 10 means. Diagrams of freq spectrum drawn out. Different sizes of black holes and what that means as far as space-time is concerned. This book was published in 1994 and I wish I had started reading it then. Kip is 20 years ahead of his time. And as a writer, he can talk you through this at a level of understanding of black holes with what we’re dealing with. I will be back for more input as this is a keeper and will read it front to back.

The universe is filled with fascinating stuff: quasars, neutron stars, white dwarfs, etc. and the most fascinating one of all - black holes. This book is primarily about this fascinating stuff and especially black holes with only chapter dedicated to wormholes and time traveling which I consider to be science fiction. It the process of unveiling this fascinating stuff, the book provides some other items of fascination some of which I will share to wet your appetite. This all started with Einstein's Theory of Relativity. At the time, one hundred years ago (November, 1915), no one recognized how important Einstein's discovery was, and the uncovering of these gems from Einstein's discovering many years to recognize, as theorists classified this as a interesting field of advanced mathematics. Kip Thorne goes the history of this discovery of the years until 1993 when this book was published and especially the period of the late 1960's and early 1970's, the important period of black holes. Within this discovery, he doesn't spend too much time on the mathematics of it, thereby making it of interest to folks who aren't very mathematically inclined. Some of the fascinating stuff uncovered is how time changes based upon the speed that an individual is traveling. For example, if a spacecraft could travel almost the speed of light (nothing can go faster according to Einstein's Theory of Relativity), how long would it take him to travel 2 billion light years? (On earth, it would take him more than 2 billion years - at which time, the earth will probably not be here). Answer is: 40 years. Also, although no one knows what really happens inside a black hole, Einstein's Theory of Relativity predicts that time stands still because of gravity. There are many other interesting things in this book for you discovery and I highly recommend taking the time to do so.

A mostly-successful attempt to portray the physics associated with General Relativity near the event horizon of any black hole - without equations, and in language for the non-physics person. By an acknowledged master of said physics (Kip has been a professor at Cal Tech for decades, in General Relativity, and was technical consultant for the recent movie "Interstellar"). This book, written 30+ years before the recent detection of gravitational waves, gives a prescient description of the cataclysmic event that could produce the kinds of waves that were actually detected.

The author presents complicated material in a very intuitive and accessible way using everyday examples. This book will easily appeal to those who have no or casual familiarity with mathematics and physics as well as to those with more advanced training. I particularly appreciated the many historical vignettes that brought the ‘humans’ behind the progress, insights and theories to life. The historical journey from Newton through Einstein and beyond was breathtaking: white dwarf stars, neutron stars, black holes, singularities and then also ‘Time machines’. A gourmet feast!

Dr. Thorne is intelligible, conversational and enlightening. He discusses an area that is of interest and many topics that touch on it. He engages in some Science Fiction fancy, but only by way of a form of preface to his serious talk. While this section is not a strength of the work, it gets its points across for the uninitiated in a reasonable manner avoiding the more flighty manner taken up by Michio Kaku in a recent reading of his Hyperspace. There is interesting history in a memoir fashion in a good deal of the recent events and in a more distant narrative from earlier periods. All is engrossing and paced as lively as I could imagine the material can be so presented. I can imagine that some may have difficulty understanding a few of the concepts, but they have been presented about as simply as I believe it to be feasible.

This book is written by a very well known expert in general relativity and black holes area. Very recently, Professor Thorne provided the necessary expertise into the realization of Interstellar Film where the scientific content has been made compatible with what is actually known about cosmology and black holes. He wrote also an excellent dedicated book focused on the film content (2014). Anyway, the "Black Holes and Time..." book is very interesting and it does not require deep knowledge in theoritical physics to understand fully its content.
